The mineralocorticoid hormone aldosterone is secreted by the adrenal cortex. It plays a major role in maintaining water and electrolyte balance and hence blood pressure homeostasis by the kidneys. The aldosterone synthesizing zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex is a highly vascularized region.
